About Me

I am a clinician who has become a supervisor, manager, director and consultant in mental health services for over 25 years in Montreal, the U.S. and now the GTHA.  After many years in nonprofits, I'm now offering private consultation and therapy.

What does Registered Psychotherapist Mean?

In order to practice psychotherapy in Ontario, I have registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.  All professionals practicing psychotherapy in Ontario have to be registered with a provincial college which ensures that they practice ethically and responsibly.

What is your background to offer psychotherapy and coaching?

I obtained a Bachelor's in Psychology and a Master's in Counselling Psychology before the age of 25 and have been practicing some form of therapy with individuals, couples, children, youth and families ever since.  Over the years I have worked for multiple nonprofits in the U.S. and Canada where I have been trained and supervised others in many models of therapy.  I have literally worked with hundreds of individuals directly over the years, and I have supervised many staff and programs to impact the lives of hundreds more.

What other skills do you bring to the table?

Besides an extensive knowledge of different forms of therapy, I am well-versed in many of the service networks in the GTHA to help you access additional services you might want or need.  I know how employment services work, how child welfare works, how divorce courts and services work, the laws that affect your family life, and much more to help you navigate new or different waters.

I also know how to assess mental health challenges (I used to diagnose disorders in the States) and what is within my scope to help versus when to refer a client for other kinds of help.

Finally, I am very experienced in protecting client privacy and confidentiality, in using technology to assist in services, and in working with insurance providers to ensure you are reimbursed for sessions per your provider's plan.

My Philosophy

Over the years I have been trained in many models (e.g. CBT, DBT) and can use them in my practice as needed.

My belief is that we are all trying the best we can to manage our relationships, work, and other life goals.  The challenges we face are often a combination of life events that create stress and our ways of managing that stress and relating to others that have become less effective.  By reflecting on our past successes and all the ways of thinking, feeling, and acting that have been most helpful, we can often find the path through our problems to greater happiness.

I start by being a good listener and move to being a good guide for your particular life situation and goals.

My Approach

Consult and Orient

We will start with a short call to review your needs and whether I'm a good fit for you as a therapist.  If we move forward, I'll review some of the basic guidelines to ensure productive, private therapy.

Assess and Recommend

The first session or two will be focused on exploring your situation and helping you with practical strategies to use right away.  This might include completing some questionnaires to tease out specific areas of concern and, in the case of marital or family issues, meeting with parties separately.

I can then make specific recommendations for how to improve your situation and we can discuss which of these paths you want to pursue.

Plan and Goal-Setting

Together we will come up with a concrete plan for using sessions to work on specific goals you want to achieve.  The goals will be tied into an overall vision for where you want to be at the end of therapy and lead us to  even more specific steps we can take together.

Intervene and Build

Good therapy is a combination of therapist intervention and personal initiative to build more and more success at the priorities we hold.  I promise to be more than a good listener and you promise to take responsibility for making your life better.  I may suggest that you read materials, write exercises, or talk to people differently, but together we will decide what solutions work best for you.

Learn and Grow

Success breeds success.  As we gain self-knowledge and skill from small steps, we can apply them to bigger steps.  Our project together will be to build a cycle of self-awareness and responsible action to help you become the best person you can be.
